Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory SchoolingJohn Taylor Gatto
Compulsory education is detrimental to your health and, in aggregate, society’s.
School does not teach how to think critically. It does not teach how to discover and pursue your passions. It teaches that money is the motivator, that obedience and conformity are the methods; and the result is impotence.
It is toxic. Socrates said that he would never teach for money, and that doing so distorts and corrupts the art at the expense of the learner. It doesn’t take much looking to see he was right; for-profit universities expanding administrators’ salaries and cutting classes simultaneously, textbook companies mandating new overpriced required texts every quarter (or semester), the ease with which anyone and everyone can dig themselves into debt with tremendous student loans… It is unsustainable, it is pathological, and it is dangerous.
We need to rethink school.
